'Worm Eats Bird Holds Your Bleating Heart In Its Hands'.....The backgammon board and dice cups for this set are entirely hand crafted. The following items are included:
- 66.5cm X 49cm all leather board when open. It is constructed with thick natural vegetable tanned leather which is covered by vegetable tanned goat skin to the inside and external facing. The shrunken grain goat skins are sourced from the world-renowned Sokoto tanners of Nigeria. All decorative colouring is applied by hand with deep penetrating permanent inks. The lines are engraved and filled with flexible metallic gold leather paint. The mural image on the lid will not be used for any other item so it is a unique art work. The main colour of the set is best described as lilac. The frame or walls are made with different coloured layers of vegetable tanned leather internally fixed with hard core buttress nails in the same way the heals on traditional dress shoes are made. They are approximately 5cm deep outside when closed or 2cm high all around when open and 2.5cm deep around the open outside. Traditional toggles are provided for keeping the lid closed when not in use. The stainless steel hinges have been treated with heat to achieve the bronze colour effect and will not tarnish.
- 2 rectangular hand stitched vegetable tanned leather dice cups with goat skin to the face and kid leather to the inside. They are hand 'box-stitched' with strong linen thread. One has red lining and stitching and the other is navy blue. They measure 7.5cm wide, 8.75cm high and 4.5cm deep.
- 30 red and blue 37mm high quality natural resin 'Fildisi' stones or counters sourced from Greece.
- 4 acrylic 14mm dice in pink and purple and a 22mm gold acrylic doubling cube.
This is a truly robust set yet retains the soft, warm tactile feel and colour of quality leather. There is a little wobble or imperfection in the angles of the walls, as it is the first time we have made one this way (the lid or top is slightly offset when the board is closed). With this considered, we still feel it has considerable integrity and significant rustic charm of a lost age. The 'MWS' initials in the centre of the playing fields refers to 'M Wray and Son Limited' which was our earliest trading name and is still used for our parent company name. The motif around the MWS initials is inspired by a rough sketch for a wristwatch dial designed by Tamlyn Hodson who made this set. The sketch is the source of the idea for our 'Worm Eats Bird' brand name and for related coloured designs in our fashion collection. The sketch is pictured for reference but is not for sale. It has an opposite meaning when inverted, ie. Peace Vs War.
